Kilim Benches

Kilim is a Turkish term that means 'textile without piles,' referring to a type of textile created through a flat weave technique.

To create a Kilim, the process begins with selecting materials, typically hand-spun wool dyed with natural sources like plants and roots, which imparts a unique palette to each rug. The weaver sets up a loom and employs two sets of yarn: one running vertically (the warp) and the other horizontally (the weft). The weft threads are interwoven through the warp in a repeating process. As the weaver works, they incorporate decorative patterns and motifs into the Kilim using different colored yarns. These designs are often geometric symbols that carry cultural significance. Designs, colors and patterns on Kilims may be similar but no two pieces are exactly alike making each one unique and one of a kind.
